Not Your Mama’s School Portrait
School Portrait Photographer | Seattle School Photographer | Seattle Elementary School Portraits
If you’re like me and grew up in the 80’s or 90’s, you probably remember those glorious school portraits: the stiff smile with too many lower teeth showing, the awkward pose, the slightly glazed-over eyes… - and, of course, that unmistakable blue backdrop.
I’ll show you mine - This was me in the late 80’s / early 90’s.

Honestly, I do feel a little nostalgic about those photos. But it’s the same kind of nostalgia I feel when I think about my Jelly shoes (remember those?) - or my extra-crispy, permed-out hair. It’s fun to look back on… but it doesn’t mean I want to relive it, or photograph my own kiddos that same way.
Today, we have so many more options, and school photos don’t have to feel stiff or generic anymore. They can be relaxed, natural, and full of personality. They can actually look like your child.
For me, that’s one of the greatest joys of photographing school portraits. As a parent myself, I know how quickly the years move. One moment your child is missing their front teeth, and the next they’re suddenly taller than you. School portraits become these quiet markers of time, like little windows into who they were at that exact moment in their lives.
And when those images feel authentic, they become something families treasure.
Letting Kids Be Themselves
Kids don’t all smile the same way — and they shouldn’t have to.
Some children are naturally bubbly and expressive. Others are thoughtful, quiet, or a little skeptical of a camera pointed at them first thing in the morning. Some want to tell me a story. Some want to make me laugh. Some just want the whole thing to be over as quickly as possible.
All of that is part of who they are.
Before I was a full-time photographer, I spent years working as a classroom teacher. That experience taught me something incredibly important: children respond to the energy of the adults around them.
When kids feel rushed, judged, or overly directed, they tend to shut down. But when they feel comfortable and respected, their personalities naturally shine through.
My goal is simply to create a comfortable moment where their real personality can show up, whether that’s a big grin, a soft smile, or even a thoughtful look.
Because years later, what parents usually love most isn’t the “perfect” smile. It’s the expression that truly feels like their child, and reminds them of an era.
As both a teacher and a mom, I’ve learned that every child deserves to be seen as they are - not squeezed into a one-size-fits-all pose.
That perspective shapes the way I photograph school portraits. I want each child to feel comfortable, respected, and even a little proud of themselves in front of the camera.
School portraits might seem like a small thing in the moment, but over time they become part of a family’s visual history.
Curious What This Could Look Like at Your School?
I photograph school portraits for independent + public schools, preschools, and performing arts programs throughout the Seattle area. And I always offer sibling photos - because, they are the best. My goal is to create a portrait day that feels calm, simple, and streamlined for schools, allowing beautiful portraits to happen with as little disruption to the school day as possible.
If you’d ever like to see what this style of school photography might look like for your child’s school community.
If you think your school might enjoy this approach to portrait day, please feel free to share with your school office or PTA!
